John Peter Benigno, 70, passed away on October 7, 2016, with his family by his side at Overlook Hospital, Summit.

John was born in 1946 in Queens, NY, where he lived until he moved to Summit, NJ, in 1953. He moved to Springfield in 1955, graduating from Jonathan Dayton High School in 1964. In 1968 John graduated from Villanova University, where he met his late beloved wife Monica Benigno. John returned to Springfield with Monica in 1970, where they went on to raise their two children.

He was a builder by trade, following in the footsteps of his late father. John put his heart and soul into his work. His expertise can be seen in numerous houses and other buildings throughout Springfield and other towns in New Jersey, including the Bridgewater Sports Arena. John also built in other states, and his work took him as far afield as Buenos Aires, Argentina.

John was a flying enthusiast, whose flight lessons led to a number of solo flights around the state. His interests after retirement also included playing blackjack at the casinos with his family and friends. He was a life-long lover of reading, whose historical insight was a continuous source of knowledge and inspiration to everyone who knew him, especially his wildly devoted protege and granddaughter Amanda. His family relied on him for his remarkably extensive and accurate memory, and for his loving guidance.

John was the cherished son of Louise A. Benigno and the late Peter A. Benigno, devoted husband to the late Monica G. Benigno, loving father of John C. Benigno and Tara G. Benigno and her husband Rey J. Reino Jr, and adoring grandfather of Amanda J. Reino. He was the dear brother of Angela Funcheon and her husband James Funcheon, Joseph Benigno and his wife Arlee Benigno, and Nancy Benigno, and loving uncle of numerous nieces and nephews. He was the loyal best friend of Judith Cotoulas and her girls. He will be sorely missed by all and always loved last by his granddaughter Amanda.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 11th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the McCracken Funeral Home, 1500 Morris Ave., Union. A service will take place at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 12th at 11 a.m., with interment to follow at Fairview Cemetery, Westfield.
